With a new national agreement on the part of 7 major midwifery organizations, collectively known as US MERA (US Midwifery Education, Regulation & Association), we are taking a new approach to CPM licensure.

The historic US MERA document Principles for Model U.S. Midwifery Legislation & Regulation provides legislative language that states may use to bring midwifery licensure standards up to the level of those set by the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM). The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) endorses the ICM standards as a basis for licensure of all US Midwives.

Our new House Bill 4364 uses the US MERA language to set educational requirements for existing and future Certified Professional Midwives in Illinois.
