BIG NEWS this week in the homebirthing world! Contact your legislators!
Right now the issues surrounding maternity care are barely a blip on the radar for our elected representatives. The only way to get them to pay attention is to remind them, regularly, that this is a problem in their community that they have the power to solve. On January 30, 2014 MANA published the most comprehensive study of US homebirth outcomes ever conceived, and the results are quite good. Let’s show the Illinois General Assembly. Send a note to your state representatives about this. Feel free to use the text below or send your representative your own thoughts.

Landmark Study of US Homebirth Outcomes
The first ever peer-reviewed prospective study of PLANNED homebirth in the United States has finally arrived! This data collection of over 16,000 planned homebirths attended primarily by Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) shows fantastic outcomes including:
5.2% Cesarean rate!
Only 8% hospital transfer rate for women who’ve already had children!
VERY low mortality rate, similar to planned hospital births
This study is the first of its kind, but only a beginning. We can’t truly assess homebirth safety while in almost half the states it’s forced underground. As the author of the report says:
“It is also possible that the unique health care system found in the United States—and particularly the lack of integration across birth settings, combined with elevated rates of obstetric intervention—contributes to intrapartum mortality due to delays in timely transfer related to fear of reprisal and/or because some women with higher-risk pregnancies still choose home birth because there are fewer options that support normal physiologic birth available in their local hospitals.”
The full text of the study, a detailed discussion of its data collection techniques, and a summary of its findings can be found at http://www.mana.org/blog/home-birth-safety-outcomes
Please help us get integrated maternity care in Illinois. Inform your Illinois State representatives about this study, and send any feedback to email@example.com. The more information we have, the better we can serve the homebirth community.
